The first ever Pickleball tournament transpired on Sunday, March 6th, 2011 from 9am – 6pm!!! I am very pleased with the number of participants. We had 57 participants in total. There were 5 divisions: Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles. There were 16 teams in Men’s Doubles, 7 teams in Women's Doubles, 11 Teams in Mixed Doubles, 13 participants in Men’s Singles and 3 participants in Women’s Singles.

There were six courts with USAPA portable nets used for the tournament. The Duraball was the ball of choice. The format was double-elimination and either we played 1 game to 11, to 15, or to 21. You must have won by 2 points and switched sides at 6, 8 or 11. USAPA rules were enforced with an honor system.
Men’s Doubles was played first, followed by Women’s doubles. Mixed doubles was next, followed my Women’s singles. Men’s singles was played last.
I was very happy with the participation, sportsmanship and the performance of the participants. Everyone enjoyed themselves and many games were played. People came from all over Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa. Local newspapers were there interviewing and taking pictures. Medals were given out to the top three in each division.
I am very proud of all the people who came out to promote this lifelong sport. You can play indoors or outdoors and the entire family can play. A lot of the participants met people from all over!! If given an opportunity, this fun sport named Pickleball will continue to grow.
Thanks to the USAPA, thanks to Libertyville Sports Complex, thanks to the volunteers and outside ambassadors and a special thanks to everyone who participated in the tournament!!
